Aims and Objectives

The current communicative language teaching approach (CLT) in language teaching aims at developing EFL learners’ ability to communicate in English, emphasizing interaction as both the means and the ultimate goal of EFL learning (Wikipedia). Interrelatedness of language skills in real life and in the classroom requires a successful application of integrative approach, making students actively participate in a vivid and effective communicative class which is supposed to be involving the integration of the four language skills, in which the teacher needs to establish a positive atmosphere, plan appropriate activities, encourage learners and deal with problems sensitively (Davies & Pearse, 2000; Jing, 2006, as cited in Akram & Malik, 2010). This application prevails in the global EFL/ESL teaching and learning contexts and can be seen in almost all modern textbooks. The webinar session provides an overview of the skills-integrated approach, sharing the speaker’s awareness of what it is, why and when EFL teachers should teach integrated skills, how to design and implement a skills-integrated lesson/activity, and what qualities a classroom teacher needs to have for a successful integrated skills lesson. The speaker hopes that this sharing could remind the participants of some basic knowledge of teaching related to the issue while looking at several practical skills-integrated classroom activities, either in the currently used national textbooks or those written and published by international publishers.

Working as an EFL classroom teacher and teacher-trainer since 1979, Dr. Ha Van Sinh has many opportunities meeting and sharing with English teachers and lecturers from North to South, from pre-school to university institutions. His teaching experience varies between undergraduate level (30 years at Nha Trang Teacher Training College, 9 years at Phu Yen University) and post-graduate level: MA TESOL programs at Can Tho University (2005-2012), joint MA TESOL programs between HCM City University of Social Sciences & Humanities and La Trobe University (2008) and MBA programs of La Trobe University, based in Hanoi – Vietnam (2006-2008). He was also a teacher-trainer for English instructors from different colleges and universities under the Vietnam – Australia Training Project in Hanoi (1998 – 2004).

Dr. Ha Van Sinh has been a frequent speaker at national and regional conferences.
