This webinar aims at answering fundamental questions of language test design and development and providing practical guidance for Vietnamese K-12 English teachers. It starts with a technical definition of a language test, the purposes or decisions that test results can be used for, and different test types with specific examples in educational practices. It then introduces how to identify test constructs in relation to the language competency framework, a course curriculum and its expected learning outcomes in order to assure the systematicity and substantive grounding of the assessments. This is followed by a detailed discussion of the concepts of difficulty and complexity levels of test items, test specification, and test task types. The webinar uses specific examples and input from Vietnamese K-12 English teachers of the new textbook for its practice activities. It also recommends some resources for teachers for their test development.

Research activities in Vietnam demonstrate a concerning degree of ethics violations, most of which are related to plagiarism (Vuong, 2018). Plagiarism leads to numerous serious consequences, including being disciplined by institutions (Quoc-Dung, 2010) or even being deprived of promotion opportunities (e.g., applying for a professorship; B. Ha, 2018). In fact, plagiarism is avoidable when Vietnamese EFL teachers and researchers are aware of plagiarism conventions. Therefore, the purpose of this webinar is to familiarize Vietnamese EFL teachers with plagiarism-related concepts and to equip them with necessary techniques to avoid plagiarism and its consequences in the academic world. Specifically, the presenters will (1) provide definitions of copyright, fair use, and plagiarism, (2) present conventions that are required to avoid plagiarism, and (3) engage the participants in various practice activities. Throughout the webinar, the participants will have opportunities to quickly check their comprehension with quizzes and horn their citation skills with facilitated practice. Leaving the webinar, the participants will have a better understanding of plagiarism-related concepts and be able to apply common conventions to avoid plagiarism. |
